IJF Tour

The International Judo Federation have sent out a couple of high ranking judo officials to visit Victoria over the Anzac Day long weekend.

We need to show them how strong judo is in Victoria and need a lot of members to come to Geelong to participate in either the Trainee Referee seminar, Demonstration or Training session, dependent on the weather.

If you are interested in being one of the new trainee referees there will be a referee training session from 10:30 – 11:30 at Kardinia International College. This session will also include a rehearsal for the demonstration in the afternoon.

We are all invited to a barbecue from 11:30 – 12:30 at Kardinia International College.

The proposed program is:

Monday 25th April – Judo sessions in Geelong

10:30 to 11:30 – Referee training seminar at Kardinia International College, and rehearsal for exhibition at Geelong Waterfront

11:30 to 12:30 – Lunch break – bbq at Kardinia International College

We then have two plans in place at the moment for the afternoon session, dependent on the weather, and will need a lot of kids to come to Geelong to either help in a demonstration or participate in a training session. At the moment the two options are:

1:00 to 3:00 – Plan A: Demonstration / Come and Try session at Geelong Waterfront (Steampacket gardens (weather permitting).

Idea – set up mats on lawn at Geelong Waterfront, and have two tiny contestants start a contest bout. The smaller kid loses, and is replaced by a slightly bigger kid. Contest continues, smaller kid (who won the first bout) loses, and is replaced by a kid somewhat bigger again. This pattern continues until we end up with, say, Jake Andrewartha beating Liam Park. Upon which (and this is the punchline, you’ll love it) a tiny judoka (maybe the first one who lost) challenges and beats Jake, who does a spectacular break-fall.

After which Nicolas can make a presentation / talk about judo, and then perhaps a come and try session – invite passers-by to throw our judoka.

Plan B – mass judo session at Kardinia International College

We’ll have the good hall available (unless I suddenly get double-booked) so we could do the same formula. With some judicious camera angles we could also manufacture a crowd for the cameras.

In fact, for either demonstration scenario, we should call upon friends and family of our judoka to act as our crowd (surprised, then curious then totally absorbed by the action). It doesn’t hurt to kick along reactions from a crowd.

If you are available please put it in your diary as we will need a lot of judoka in their judogi for the day.
